facebook graph search & how it can help your business

In case you haven't heard yet, Facebook is working on a new search system that will completely change the way we browse the internet and connect with others.  The Facebook Graph Search is hyper-specific; it allows users to search by location, areas of interest, and business type.  This is a dream come true for people who use frequently use Facebook (for both personal and business purposes), since we can all attest to how awful the current search system is compared to other social media platforms.

This is a total game changer for gaining new connections, as you can now search "People in Tampa who like craft beer" or "Restaurants in Barcelona my friends have eaten" and get great results.  This new search is also great for businesses.  The more information you add to your profile (think meaningful keywords!!), the more control you have with who you want to reach.

The Facebook Graph Search also gives a whole new meaning to Likes.  Before, having a lot of Likes didn't mean too much in the grand scheme of things - they didn't boost your reach in searches or give your more advertising power.  Now, if you were to search "Mexican restaurants in Chicago," the restaurant with the most Likes would show up at the top of your results.  If that doesn't make you want to put more effort into your social media marketing plan, I don't know what does!

The new search is especially great for small businesses who need to put their limited advertising dollars to good use.  Now, if you pay attention to the search terms that bring up your business, you can see what keywords to use and who is looking you up.  You can also use this to focus your advertising.  Using the Mexican restaurant example, you could limit your ads to only reach people in your region who are searching for Mexican food, and not have to compete with every restaurant advertisement in the country.

Bottom Line:
  1.  Facebook users can now have access to highly specific searches
  2. The graph provides very visual results
  3. Likes become more relevant - the more you have, the higher you are in search results
  4. You can see how users are searching for your business, and use that information to allocate your advertising dollars to those specific demographics
Take a look at how the Facebook Graph Search will look here, and if you're a business, keep up to date with it's development (it's still in testing).  I truly think this will be a huge step forward in Facebook marketing.  What are your thoughts?
