"Starting today, hashtags will be clickable on Facebook. Similar to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest, hashtags on Facebook allow you to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion. When you click on a hashtag in Facebook, you'll see a feed of what other people and Pages are saying about that event or topic."
In case you're still unfamiliar with how a hashtag works, here's an example: if a Facebook user posts something about the NBA finals and uses the hashtag #NBAfinals, you can now click the hashtag and find other posts revolving around the same topic. It's letting more people join the conversation and communicate with others who are interested in the same things. This new development is pretty exciting, especially when coupled with the new Facebook Graph Search which lets users search by keywords, as that's essentially what a hashtag is.
I believe Facebook hashtags will catch on fairly quickly due to the fact that most social media users are already familiar with using them. Companies will love getting discovered by using hashtags for breaking news, new products and trending topics. Local business can hashtag their geographic area, and small business can hashtag things that pertain to their specific niche. The only downfall is that, like many other new Facebook developments, Facebook only rolled out hashtags to a portion of users, so not everyone is able to take advantage of their uses yet. If you were left out, keep an eye on things so you can utilize this new tool to the best of your abilities once it's available.
